Alex-Christian Lucas is a two-time Broadway World Award Winning actor, writer, theatre researcher, and historian, who has been performing since he was eight years old. He is a proud New Orleans native based in London and is a member of Equity UK, the American Guild of Musical Artists, and the American Society for Theatre Research. He has performed in opera, musical theatre, and British pantomime, drawing inspiration from his hometown's rich cultural, historical, and musical traditions. He graduated in May 2020 from Loyola University New Orleans with his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and minor in Theatre Arts, and in March 2022 from the University of London’s Royal Central School of Speech and Drama with his MA in Music Theatre.

Last night I was thrilled to go see @lynnnottage’s newest musical, Secret Life of Bees at the @almeida_theatre! If you don’t know Lynn and her work, you should. I was lucky enough to see the Broadway productions of her play Clyde’s and musical @mjthemusical last year. She’s the first Black woman to have a play, a musical, and an opera running simultaneously in NYC, and she has two Pulitzer Prizes to her name. She is the reason I went see the show last night, so color me surprised when shortly before showtime, I hear “Excuse me, I’m sitting there,” only to look up and it be Lynn herself. I was ecstatic. I told her how much I admired her work and we chatted. She was taking notes throughout the show, and there were several moments where her and I shared a laughing glances at parts of the dialogue of the show. It was such a special theatre experience for me to sit next to such a prolific playwright and watch her work on the show while watching it for my first time. Thanks Lynn for being so humble. Run to see this show! It’s a beautiful cross between Hairspray, Violet, and Color Purple, yet has such a unique and poignant voice and message to it. “Alex Christian, meet Alex-Christian Lucas!” Last night I FINALLY got to meet my actor doppelgänger @alex95christian! I just has to recreate the infamous spiderman meme with him! 😂😂😂 Every actor knows well that Equity has strict rules about actors not having the same or similar names, so when I went to pick mine, I was distraught to find out I could not keep my birth name because there was another Alex Christian working in the UK. No other stage name felt right for me. So about a year and a half ago when I joined Equity, I reached out to him to see if he’d let me keep my birth name as my stage name if I hyphenated it, and he graciously agreed. He’s a highly seasoned and talented professional actor and choreographer and is currently the dance captain of @newsies_uk, where he is slaying on a nightly basis. He is also just a really genuine, kind guy. Thanks Alex Christian for being amazing and @jpbarnett2 for facilitating our meeting! P.S. I was thrilled to meet a composer whose work I highly admire, @tomkittmusic, at intermission of @almostfamousbwy last night! I caught him out the corner of my eye at the bar, and he was incredibly kind and gracious to me. I’ve been lucky enough to see much of his work on Broadway, including the music he wrote for @flyingoversunset, @almostfamousbwy, and @bringitonuktour (which I saw in London), as well as the fabulous arrangements he’s done for @thespongebobmusical, @hohmusical, and @jaggedlittlepill. Tom is the king of adapting and arranging pop music for the Broadway stage, in my humble opinion. Some of his other works, which I haven’t yet been lucky enough to see, are American Idiot, If/Then, and, most notably, Next to Normal, one of only ten musicals in history to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Next to Normal will be making its highly anticipated UK premiere later this year, and I can’t wait to see it. Tom told me he’d be in London for the production, too! It was such a serendipitous meeting for which I’m grateful! Thanks Tom! Also, @jimmyfallon and Cameron Crowe were in the audience last night too. Last night, I opted to arrive at the theatre two hours before curtain and was able to nab a stalls center ticket, an arguably better seat than the first time I saw it. The show was just as exhilarating the second time, and I was particularly riveted by the Tammy’s 11 O’clock number “If You Came to See Me Cry.” The performance was stunningly electric, and the audience leapt to its feet (myself included) the minute it ended. As I was leaving the theatre, I was just thinking to myself, “Wow, Katie was really on fire tonight” until the lady behind me just exclaimed “Can you believe that was the understudy?!?” I turned around in shock, “WHAT!?!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? I thought that was Katie?!?” It wasn’t, and my mind was blown. The last two months have been absolutely crazy as I’ve navigated my way through moving and getting settled here in London. I’ve already had so many opportunities: to see new shows, meet many new people (celebrities and new friends alike), acquire a fabulous agent @gls_talent, start auditioning in person again, and to get to know the city even more than I did when I was here last year for my Masters. Throughout all of this, I’ve been researching and writing on a topic that I’m fascinated by and started working on last August, shrinking Broadway Ensemble sizes. I’ve decided to turn my research into a full fledge book for publication, and I am THRILLED to share that I will be attending @bwaycon in New York next week as a presenter to present my original research! The last two months have certainly been a challenge, but I’m so ecstatic to be sharing this passion project that is still a work in progress at such a prestigious event. It’s going to be epic!!!
